Bear's Tale

The bear lies on a blanket facing the sun. Dinah Washington's "Georgia on my mind" grazes the air softly from nearby speakers. He relaxes with his fingers intertwining behind his neck, stretching his elbows to the sky.

What makes this day unlike any other is exactly what he decides it will be. His one rule in life: you are the rules and no matter what happens, you are your jury, your approximator, weigher of evils and wonders alike. At the end of it all, you'll be lost within yourself trying to decipher your own apparent existence if you attach judgement to who you are. We are too keen to harm, the bear thought, staring at the ethereal skies. The problem isn't doing harm, it's in doing nothing at all.

He wondered if he had been clear enough. He wondered if he said all that needed to be said. He wondered how different life would be if he had done something about this or that. But now, holding gaze into the vibrant blue of summertime and the soft harmony of sound surrounding the bear, none of it seemed to matter, knowing he could start whenever he wanted he pulled out a scruffy old tatty memo pad.

He began to scribble away his thoughts.

He closes it, waiting on the next breeze to pass carrying with it the scents from far and wide filling his nose with a cocktail of aromas.

Arising, he packs up his belongings neatly in the blanket and slaps it over his shoulder. He walks on with an old timely whistle; the discoveries never end, he thinks, pressing onward.
